Chef Sally Abe was named Estrella Damm’s Gastropub Chef of the Year in 2020 and SquareMeal’s Female Chef of the Year in 2021. No doubt, she was picked as the contestant on the BBC Two show Great British Menu.

So far on the show, Sally Abe, one of them, had already wowed judges (Chef Tom Kerridge, comedian Ed Gamble, and restauranteur Nisha Katona) both on the first and second episode.
In the first episode, Sally scored tens across the board for her starter and fish course. This carried through to the second episode, where her main course and dessert earned her top marks again. As of this time, Sally also already won over Great British Menu fans with her Willy Wonka-inspired chocolate bar dessert.
In the show, she is the only female competing against three male chefs (Ben, Harvey, and Liam) for her region. And she says that was a bit “strange” experience for her as she is used to working in the balanced kitchen. “The guys were nice but it’s different. Although everyone likes to pretend we are on the way to being equal. That’s not the case in reality and we have to keep on fighting the good fight!”, she added a bit of ‘gender disparity’ angle to it.
This is, however, not the first time Sally is on the show. She played this game, hoping to secure her place at the year’s banquet, also during Season 15 back in March 2020.
When asked about her recurring appearance, she explained that she has got such a good relationship with all of the producers after being on the first time. So they all kept in touch and Sally had let them know that she would be keen to do the show again, which is why they invited her back.
Sally, so you know, had no ambitions of being a chef from a young age. She only discovered her calling at the age of 18 after committing to a rather dull office job. So, she enrolled in a hospitality business management and culinary arts degree at Sheffield Hallam University, which she enjoyed.
In her words, she came down to London as part of a sandwich course and her first job was at The Savoy under Marcus Wareing. From there, she went onto Claridge’s.
