On January 6, immediately after Donald Trump arrived back at the White House from the Ellipse, Tony Ornato told Cassidy Hutchinson, an assistant to Meadows, the White House’s then-chief of staff, of a surprising occurrence. Cassidy stated that Tony claimed Trump lunged at Bobby Engel, who was in charge of his security detail on that particular day, as well as the driver of the car he was traveling in to get back to the White House.
Cassidy stated that according to Tony’s account of the incident, Trump allegedly requested that the driver transport him to the Capitol rather than the White House. Although Ornato wasn’t in the car at the time of the occurrence, Cassidy claims he detailed it to her while Engel watched in silence.
Bobby was the special agent in charge of Trump’s security detail. He was with the former president the entire day, during the rally at the Ellipse, and on the return trip to the White House. Cassidy’s testimony has not received any public commentary from Bobby. He revealed to the Jan. 6 committee earlier this year that he and Trump discussed visiting the Capitol while en route back to the White House. However, he told that he “took different views on the topic” and went back to the White House instead.
Ryan Goodman, professor of law at New York University School of Law, said it is “legally significant” that some of Engel’s testimony is “consistent” with Hutchinson.
Bobby is said to have grabbed the former president by the arm and told him “sir, you need to take your hand off the steering wheel”.
The New York Times and Associated Press say both Bobby and the driver are prepared to testify that Trump never lunged for the steering wheel. Tony also reportedly preparing to deny the claims from Hutchinson under oath.
Given Hutchinson’s testimony, the committee anticipates calling him back for more inquiries.

“There is a rigorous selection process and you have to be highly skilled and experienced to get this job,” the former Secret Service agent told DailyMail. “You have to travel with the president wherever he goes. It’s incredibly demanding and it involves a lot of sacrifices. This guy’s job was to run on stage and take a bullet for the president – he’s the final line of defense”.
They added, “However there is a difference between exercising discretion and being asked a question under oath. If they subpoena him and ask him a direct question about it I would expect him to answer”.
Bobby formerly served in the Marine corps. He retired from the role and now leads the Secret Service’s Tampa Field Office. He and his new team busted a counterfeit currency ring in January, according to a Secret Service media release.
