The Staircase editor goes through countless hours of the footage of Michael Peterson’s trial for murdering his wife Kathleen Peterson and she falls in love with the man. According to Michael, when he was in prison, he got a letter from Paris. The letter was from Sophie. In the letter, Sophie introduced herself being the editor of Staircase.
In the letter, Sophie shared that she believed that Michael was innocent and it was an “injustice”. She also shared that she knew him better than anybody except his family because she watched hundreds of hours of Michael. She offered to send some books and that’s how the relationship between the two started.
Sophie sent him Proust and sent him more books and it would become letters and the relationship developed from that. Eventually, they made plans to live in Paris. Later, he came to the realization he can’t live in Paris because he couldn’t speak French.

After coming out of the prison, Sophie and Michael spent three days together and went up to Normandy. Sophie told him that if he can’t commit to loving her all the time it was better they end the relationship.
Michael shared that it was a great blow to both of them and for which he felt sorrow rather than guilt. He added, “I could not give her what she really needed and deserved. That would be a full-time partner living with her in Paris.”
Sophie told him if he was going to be content just being an old grandfather. He told her that would work fine for him. He told her that he has done all kinds of things in his life and been to many places and now that he was 75, he could be a grandfather.
The relationship between the two was confirmed by The Staircase director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade in May 2018. According to Jean-Xavier, the relationship lasted more than a decade. He told a French newsweekly, “This is one of the incredible things that happened during those 15 years. Life is really full of surprises,”
He added, “They had a real story, which lasted until May 2017. But she never let her own feelings affect the course of editing”. Sophie flew from Paris to Durham, North Carolina, every “two or three months” for four years after Michael was sentenced to prison in 2003, according to a 2008 story in Le Monde, a French publication.
