Meet Steve Letourneau, Mary Kay Letourneau First Husband
Steven Letourneau and Mary Kay Letourneau were leading a blissful life in Washington. New York Post cited that they were college sweethearts. Michelle Lobdell, Mary Kay’s best friend since grade six in Newport Beach, California, told the outlet that she was shocked to meet Steve for the first time.
Michelle revealed that they had very little in common intellectually. However, May became pregnant and her mother pressured her to marry Steve. The long-time best friend told to New York Post, “He checked all the boxes but when I met him there was nothing there … I realize now that it was her mother’s pressure. She wanted her mother’s approval and she never got it … She never had anyone she could rely on in her life to love and protect her and look after her self-interest”.
Steve and Mary’s marital life was described as “fraught” and “filled with turmoil and money issues”. Michelle believes that her best friend was never in love with Steve. Hence, she created Villi Fualaau as her idea of ideal partner.
In 1996, Steve and Mary were married and already had four children. But, Steve had no clue that his wife was having an affair with a 12-year-old student Villi Fualaau. At the time, Villi was only a year and a half older than their eldest child.
After Steve Letourneau discovered love letters between his wife and the student, their marriage broke down.”It just blew me away,” Steve told. “It was so far out there.”
Steve confronted Mary. She confessed. He later drove to the boy’s house. “I asked point blank: `Are you sleeping with my wife?’ ” The boy said yes. “I said: `Don’t call anymore. This is big trouble.’ ” Steve said he consulted a priest and his wife’s family.
“It’s easier said than done to turn the mother of your children into police,” he said.
After a relative informed the authorities about their relationship, Mary Kay would be convicted guilty of second-degree child rape. In the meantime, Steve requested a divorce and was given complete custody of their four kids. He subsequently went to Alaska, remarried, and had additional kids. He continued living his life despite keeping quiet about what had occurred.
In 1997, Steve LeTourneau told The Orange County Register in a telephone interview from Alaska, “I just want her to get help. She’s not Mary Poppins like some of the people think she is.” At the time, Mary said that she still loves the boy, whose identity has been kept a secret.
“It’s craziness. Just absolute craziness,” Steve LeTourneau said at the time. “She’s still living in fantasy land.”
In July 2020, Mary Kay died of cancer at the age of 58. Her ex-husband Steve didn’t say anything about his ex’s untimely passing. But the Fualaau and Letourneau families released a joint statement addressing the same.
“We are deeply saddened to share the very difficult news that our beloved Mary passed away peacefully on July 6th, 2020 after a six-month battle since being diagnosed with stage IV, or metastatic, cancer,” the statement read. “Mary fought tirelessly against this terrible disease. It is in that spirit that we ask for privacy and respect for our desire to focus on the road ahead for all of us who make up Mary’s collective family. We ask that our boundaries and need for privacy be honored with continued kindness and understanding,” the families added.
Steve said he had “moved on” and had “nothing to say” about the past in an interview with People magazine in 2017. According to an insider, the blended family faced challenges in the middle of the 1990s, but the ex-husband was able to move past the controversy.
The source told Radar Online that Steve had “little communication” with his ex-wife. “He’s gotten on with his life and everything is positive,” the source said.
Steve Letourneau Kids
Steve Letourneau is a father of six kids. He and Kay shared four children; Jacqueline, Mary Claire, Nicholas, and Steven Jr.
Steve LeTourneau, 34 when the scandal came out, had temporary custody of the couple’s four children, ages 3, 5, 10, and 12 at the time. They are in counseling, he told the press. “My oldest son is having the most difficult time,” LeTourneau said. “He has a lot of anger. He’s mad at the world. He loves his mom, but he knows what she did was wrong. It was flaunted right in their face.”
Steve said that his wife described “the boy[Villi Fualaau]” as a “gifted artist” she wanted to help. She brought him home after school, took him to drive-ins, and encouraged their oldest son to befriend him. He added that he sometimes returned home from work to find his wife and the boy asleep on the couch.
A source told Radar Online, “He is a wonderful man and father. None of the kids have turned out bad and he did it all on his own. Steven is a wonderful, hardworking man. He’s always provided and cared for his family.” The insider revealed how Nicholas graduated from Georgetown with a computer science degree, and Steven Jr is a father of two. “I attribute all of that to Steven, not to Mary Kay,” the insider told Radar Online.
