Steven “Tig” Strassburg is the star of National Geographic’s latest offering, First Alaskans.
The show is one of National Geographic’s most popular and profitable TV shows. The show followed the lives of people living off the grid in tough climatic and topographical environments. They make ends meet by using their resourcefulness, perseverance, and spirit to survive and prosper in one of the world’s toughest and most beautiful places.

Steven “Tig” Strassburg is one of the casts from this season who is of Athabascan heritage with a lineage that dates back to the Southfork Caribou people. Koyukon is the language that they speak which occupies the largest territory of any Alaska Athabascan language.
The language is spoken in three dialects — Upper, Central, and Lower — in 11 villages along the Koyukuk and middle Yukon rivers, and with a population of 2300 nearly 300 people spoke the language.
Steven and his family live along the Koyukuk River in the interior of Alaska, calling the village of Allakaket home.

Speaking for the people of Allaket, Steven shared his worries about airlines getting shut down that serve the village which meant that there won’t be any more deliveries of food to the town (and also no more mail or medicine).
