Sven Olaf Kamphuis was the brain behind the smooth operation of CyberBunker. Viewers of true crime got to learn his side of the story on a Netflix documentary. Where is he today? How old is he now?
Read all about him in this article below.
Sven Olaf Kamphuis On Netflix’s CyberBunker: The Criminal Underworld
The principal character in Netflix’s CyberBunker: The Criminal Underworld is Sven Olaf Kamphuis, also known as CB3ROB aka “SK,” the brains of CyberBunker. According to Kamphius’s Crunchbase page, he was a well-known spokesperson and founder of CyberBunker in 1998. In essence, CyberBunker was a modestly founded “bulletproof” hosting company in the late 1990s.
Originally established as a web hosting business, it is housed in a defunct NATO bunker in Kloetinge, Netherlands.
Sven possesses the ability to shut out the internet entirely if he so chooses, but he also chooses to focus on other areas of his own fantasy world, so if there’s one word that best describes him, it would have to be chaotically brilliant.
In addition to being an avid internet user, the native of Utrecht, Netherlands, has been a longtime partner of Herman Xennt since joining CyberBunker back in the 1990s. He even had the brilliant notion to make the Republic of CyberBunker, one of the richest and most technologically proficient nations on earth, into a nation based on their organization.
“We actually declared independence,” Sven explained in the documentary series. “We don’t want to be on your map. We have our own society. We have our own rules, we have our own laws, we have our own everything.”
Sven was Crown Prince/Vice President, although it is also said that he has always served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Telecommunications, Transport, and War. Their King/President was fellow Dutchman Xennt. So, it should come as no surprise that he took charge of the situation when they started experiencing problems in the early 2010s with a non-profit organization called Spamhaus and its partners in the UK that focused on spam.
Sven resorted to the only tactic he knew when Spamhaus blacklisted CyberBunker for running an excessive number of websites that released a lot of data into the public domain and for refusing to negotiate a peaceful resolution. He is said to have launched a big cyberattack by releasing a focused stream of data that was so large that it affected millions of people worldwide by slowing down the internet for more than a week.
As a result, on April 25, 2013, he was taken into custody by Spanish authorities in the vicinity of Barcelona at the request of Dutch authorities. He was then extradited and officially accused of carrying out multiple distributed denial of service (DDos) assaults.
According to sources, Sven had been working out of a bunker and used a van as a mobile office for computers, packed with enough technology to be able to hack into any network, anywhere. Unfortunately, though, the judges suspended Sven’s whole sentence with credit for 55 days previously spent as he awaited extradition, so even though he was found guilty and given a 240-day prison sentence in 2016, he escaped any jail time.
Furthermore, even though the Prince continued to play a significant role in CyberBunker, he wasn’t detained when the Germans expanded their facility in 2019 because he wasn’t even present. Moreover, he wasn’t later charged with anything.
Where Is Sven Olaf Kamphuis Today?
Sven Olaf Kamphuis is now residing in Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands. According to reports, Kamphuis may have withdrawn from the scene after 2014. To what precise extent he is connected to CyberBunker’s post-Kloetinge phase is still unknown, though. In 2013, after spokesperson Kamphuis for CyberBunker was detained, the group decided to construct a new bunker in Traben-Trarbach, Germany.
However, in Germany, more individuals were observing their actions. In 2015, the German authorities publicly intercepted the traffic coming from the bunker. Simultaneously, there were international efforts to build cases against darknet markets, including the Wall Street Market, which operated out of CyberBunker. The United States government initiated action in April 2019, apprehending the individuals suspected of running the Wall Street Market and confiscating the servers belonging to CyberBunker in Germany.
This sequence of events ultimately resulted in the German CyberBunker’s closure in September 2019. Law enforcement confiscated hundreds of disks, and the location was shut down. Herman Xennt led the team’s audacious raid into the German bunker, but he escaped being apprehended and charged with a crime—a fate that fell upon Sven Kamphuis. Whether or not Kamphuis was involved with the German CyberBunker version, he seems to have escaped punishment after serving two months in prison.
Sven did not suffer as severe a punishment as some of the others associated with CyberBunker. This was the last chapter in the tale of CyberBunker, which had several unexpected turns and left many unanswered concerns regarding the founder’s role and the eventual fate of the individuals involved.
“Their law does not apply to us,” Sven shared in a Netflix documentary. “We don’t stand above their law, we stand completely outside of their law [as a free nation]. It’s their law, not our law. There may be some overlapping basic values, such as not murdering thy neighbor and that sort of stuff. But other than that, our law is quite a bit different from theirs.”
