Deadliest Catch: What Happened To Todd Kochutin?
Deadliest Catch’s Todd Kochutin died on 26 February 2021 “as a result of injuries sustained while on board F/V Patricia Lee.” On 26 February 2021, his friend Landon Cheney gave a little insight into Todd’s accident.
He posted on his Facebook, “Just got some pretty bad news. My friend Todd who I fished with on the Summer Bay last winter just died today while fishing crab. This is a picture of me, him, and Nick took when Todd stopped by the boat in the fall. Rest Easy my brother”.
Landon is the first one to break the news to Captain Bill Wichrowski that Todd died.
One other cast of Deadliest Catch, Mahlon Reyes, had an accident in 2020 and hurt his knee. So, Todd was recruited to replace him in the show. He reportedly did only two trips just to finish the season.
His crew members were affected by the death of the new recruit. Karl Edmund Rasmussen wrote, “Rip Todd, u were always a pleasure to talk to prayers to your family u will be missed by many tragedies today on the Bering sea, probably the nicest fisherman I’ve met”.
About what happened, a few people shared that he was crushed on deck by a pot on his head.
One viewer on YouTube commented, “They were stacking in rough seas when his accident happened. In fact, Captain of the Patty Lee had actually called “Last Pot” and was preparing to bring everyone in to hunker down in rough seas, so the timing couldn’t have been worse…literally moving the last, or 2nd last pot of the string. BTW, the Coast Guard would not be told to stand down, they still respond regardless, they probably relayed that time was no longer a factor. Maybe if the seas were too rough to even safely lower a basket, they may have gone back to base to await a better break in the weather. That would suck for the crew tho…just imagine what they were going thru…wow.”
A crab pot can weigh anywhere from 600 to 800 pounds.
