Todd Peterson is one of the two sons born to novelist Michael Peterson and his late ex-wife Patricia Peterson. His parents got married in 1987. Later, in 1997, his father married Kathleen Peterson. In December 2001, Kathleen was found dead on the staircase of her home so, his father became the prime suspect and eventually got charged with first-degree murder.
According to IMDB, Todd appeared on WRAL Murder Trials (2007-2011), The Staircase II: The Last Chance (2013), and The Staircase (2004-2013).
Throughout the first-degree murder trial of his father, he maintained that his father was innocent and Michael didn’t kill his second wife. In the first episode of The Staircase, Todd shared that the first emotion that he felt was shock upon seeing ambulances outside the house and, since he didn’t yet know what was going on, he was afraid his father had suffered a heart attack.
Todd added that he felt relieved when he went inside to find his dad unharmed, but quickly learned that something had happened to his stepmother. He and his siblings were of the opinion that Michael did not harm Kathleen, according to AP News. They believed that their father would never get a fair trial from the Durham police or prosecutors.
His step-sister Caitlin Atwater, who initially claimed her parents were close and loved each other, changed her statement after watching the autopsy pictures and knowing about her step-father’s homosexual involvements. Later on, she filed a lawsuit against her step-father.
Todd had spoken on his father’s behalf and said, “She has been poisoned … by a one-sided presentation of selective facts by police and prosecutors. If she was interested in the truth, she would have waited until all the facts come out at trial before making her mind up about what happened to our mother. Her failure to do so, and her transparent attempt to prejudice our father’s trial, is inexcusable.”
In July 2021, Michael called Todd when their mother died after a massive heart attack the previous night. Since he lived nearby his parents’ house, he arrived and called 911.
