Who Are Travis King Parents?
According to United Nations and U.S. officials, a U.S. Army private Travis King who had recently served his time in a South Korean prison center crossed the border into North Korea “without authorization” and is currently being held there. The 23-year-old has been a cavalry scout in the Army since January 2021 and has no deployments, according to service information provided by Army spokesperson Bryce Dubee.
“A U.S. National on a JSA orientation tour crossed, without authorization, the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” the United Nations Command said on Twitter. “We believe he is currently in DPRK custody and are working with our KPA counterparts to resolve this incident.”
Travis had served 47 days at a South Korean detention facility following an altercation with locals, according to a U.S. official.
Travis King was freed from the detention center, and two other U.S. officials confirmed this to ABC News. King then spent nearly a week being observed at a U.S. post in South Korea. On Monday, he was brought to the customs checkpoint at the Incheon International Airport after completing out-processing from the facility.
Travis entered the terminal by himself because the military escort was unable to pass the checkpoint because they did not have a ticket. An official stated that he was meant to take a flight and land in Fort Bliss, Texas. Another official informed him that he had “pending administrative separation actions for foreign conviction” there. Instead, he left the terminal to take a tour of the DMZ. It is unclear when he purchased a ticket.
Travis was no longer in detention because he had completed his sentence. There was no need for an escort to the gate, and there was no cause to worry that he wouldn’t make it onto the plane. When Travis’s mother Claudine learned that her son had entered North Korea, Claudine told ABC News, that she was astounded.
“I can’t see Travis doing anything like that,” Claudine Gates said.
Claudein said the Army told her on Tuesday morning that her son had crossed into North Korea. She said she last heard from her son “a few days ago,” when he told her would return soon to his base in Fort Bliss. She added she just wants “him to come home.”
“We’re very early in this event and so there’s a lot that we’re still trying to learn,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said of the situation. “What we do know is that one of our service members who was on a tour willfully and without authorization crossed the military demarcation line. We believe that he is in DPRK custody. We’re closely monitoring and investigating the situation, working to notify the soldier’s next of kin and engaging to address this incident.”
Lloyd added, “I’m absolutely foremost concerned about the welfare of our troop. We will remain focused on this, and this will develop in the next several days.”
One woman who was on the tour with King said she initially thought his dash was some kind of stunt – and that she and others in the group could not believe what happened.
