Tyler Shultz At Theranos
A former Theranos employee Tyler Shultz played an instrumental role in the downfall of biotech juggernaut Theranos. He is the grandson of U.S. statesman George Shultz, who held four different Cabinet positions in three Republican presidential administrations. He didn’t even recognize that he was in a whistleblowing situation when he discovered fraud at Theranos.
Tyler told Fraud Magazine, “I had zero strategies. I was just reacting to things.”
But, all of it got its start with a chance meeting Theranos’s Elizbeth Holmes held at his grandfather’s home. After an invitation from his grandfather, he attended the meeting which “It sounded like science fiction.”
Tyler joined Theranos in 2013 after graduation. Four days later, he and his team members received an email telling them to scrap all their tests because the company was moving them to “assay validation,” the evaluation, assessment, or analysis of a test method to determine its fitness for a particular use.
However, many of these tests weren’t going well. He told the outlet, “Morale was very low when I started and very low when I left. The one apparent thing was the culture of secrecy.” When he first joined the company there were a few words he wasn’t allowed to say when describing his job to ostensibly protect trade secrets.
He was also troubled by the data runs on the machine. Once they started handing out results from third-party devices, it became very alarming to him and in 2014, Tyler contacted the New York State Department of Health. He didn’t yet want to expose Theranos so he didn’t give the company’s name or the tests it ran.
Theranos then reached out using a fake email account and named Theranos, the tests that were run, and their dates. But, he never heard back. In 2015, John Carreyrou sent an email. Then, he sent John an email exchange he’d had with Holmes and Theranos’ former president and COO, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani.
The leakage of information also brought tension to the Shultz family. His grandfather believed the machine worked and continued inviting Elizabeth for lunches. Meanwhile, George and Tyler barely spoke and didn’t even attend his grandfather’s 95th birthday.
Their relationship was never the same and he never apologized. “But he did say I did the right thing,” Tyler Shultz said.
He and his parents spent over $400 thousand on legal fees.
After the expose of the fraud, Elizabeth was charged with wire fraud.

But, Carolynn Vuong, Tyler’s girlfriend turned to-be wife graduated from Bishop Montgomery High School in 2009. She attended the University of Queensland and studied Biological Sciences. Carolynn earned her BA in Human Biology from Stanford University in 2013. Then, she enrolled at Harvard Medical School and earned her D.M.D in 2018.
After that, Carolynn enrolled at the University of California, San Francisco where she earned her MS in Craniofacial Sciences in 2021.
Carolynn is currently working as Pediatric Dental Resident at the University of California. She had also worked as a Clinical Researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital from 2016 to 2018.
