Texas-based Beekeeper Walter Schumacher is starring in Discovery’s new show titled “Bee Czar” the name he is famous for in Texas. In the show, he will be rescuing bees from unwanted places and relocating them where they can thrive and pollinate without wearing any bee suits.
Through working with wild bees, and beginning to understand the depth of their beauty, intelligence, and keystone role in the ecosystem, Walter developed an unbreakable bond with the honey bee. He even realized that the bee suits in the heat would kill him before bees did, so he eventually just stopped wearing one altogether.
He had a thriving business before the COVID-19 pandemics. But, like most businesses, it also affected him.
However, Walter is back and building his business again and one day hopes to rescue unwanted hives for donations.
Walter also shared about his plan to transform his family farm into the new business headquarter after forming a small team including his son Will. The show follows Walter as he restarts the business and trains new beekeepers, including his two younger sons, while Will works to secure contracts selling honey to businesses.

Walter founded American Honey Bee Protection Agency and Central Texas Bee Rescue & Preserve in 2006. Walter, also known fondly as the “Bee-Czar”, was intrigued when a friend of his explained that the key to saving the world was to save the honey bee. From that point on, Walter took every step towards figuring out how to save bees from unwanted places without endangering their lives.
Then in 2011, he established Central Texas Bee Rescue as a non-profit under the umbrella of the Austin Community Foundation and held the company’s first fundraiser.
He publicized the non-profit to eliminate the extermination of bees and keep them pollinating important plants. “I’m just so tired of people killing a little creature that makes such a divine thing,” Schumacher told Statesman, adding that honeybees pollinate most of the plants that grow in Texas.
In 2015, Walter made headlines after establishing an unusual business partnership with John Paul DeJoria, owner of Patron Tequila and the Paul Mitchell hair products company who reportedly has a net worth of $2.9 billion according to Forbes. The business venture started when Paul approached him at W Austin Hotel downtown in 2013 and complimented his dreads.
Walter spoke with Reporting Texas and shared, “If bees go, about half our agriculture goes, which means humans start dying, too. I think it was a great investment for me to do for mankind.”
The cost of removing bees is around $300 to $1000 based on their size and location. The money that he earns he ends up losing in most removals and John makes up the differences. Because of their partnership revenue from bee product sales, Walter’s company was able to thrive.
