Clare Kambhu On MTV’s The Exhibit: Finding The Next Great Artist

There weren’t many (probably any) reality TV shows that showcases the high-stakes tension of producing work for an institutional exhibition except Bravo’s Next Big Thing. But now, there are two. Joining the category is MTV’s brand new show The Exhibit: Finding the Next Great Artist. The show brings together seven American artists competing against each other for a presentation at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and of course a cash prize of $100,00.

Our star, Clare was one of those seven contenders who participated in the weekly challenges inspired by the museum’s collection. Her works highlight experiences of her everyday life as a teacher, either abstracting or magnifying simple objects. For instance a seat chair, or the inside of a forgotten drawer. “My work centers on education and its inherent evaluative tracking mechanisms,” she said.

Also, Clare confessed that one of the reasons why she joined the show was because she was curious to see how her paintings would shift in response to the format of reality TV — “one that places competition and its constraints front and center,” she added.

The other artists who joined Clare for the inaugural season of The Exhibit were Jamaal Barber (his arts convey the multitude of expressions of Black culture), Jennifer Warren (her oil works vividly capture the quotidian experiences of women of color in domestic settings), Frank Buffalo Hyde (his work reflect contemporary Indigenous life rendered through satirical and Pop sensibilities), Misha Kahn (her art sends viewers on a psychedelic odyssey), Jillian Mayer (her art examines how physical realities are mediated through digital and mass-media technologies) and Baseera Khan (she seeks to unpack the relationship between labor and spirituality on the body).

Clare Kambhu Career

Clare Kambhu has spent her life as an artist — painting, and teaching. She’s been an art teacher at the NYC Department of Education ever since September 2011.

Also, in 2015, she was an adjunct lecturer at the University of Albany, SUNY, in 2017 a teaching fellow at Yale University, and the next year a teaching fellow at Yale Prison Education Initiative at Dwight Hall.

Overall, Clare has taught art at both high school and college levels. She also creates interactive online art courses using Adobe InDesign and has curated booths in the past. Her curation works include the 2021 Polymer Piety, SPRING/BREAK Art Show, and 2020 Separated as though by a Pane of Glass, SPRING/BREAK Art Show, both in NY, NY.

As for her Group Shows, she exhibited at the 2021 Bronx Calling: The Fifth AIM Biennial, 2020 Open House, Elegran, 2019 Un-Museo de Raíces Movedizas, 2019 Reading Painting, and 2018 Present Tense (all in NY), and 2018 Way Out Now, 2018 Super/Natura, 2018 Wild Seed, and 2017 Feast, Yale University Green Hall Galler (all in CT).

But she only had one solo show i.e. 2022 Seating Arrangement, Office Space Gallery in Salt Lake City, UT, at the time of writing this article.

Clare’s artwork is like no other. The attention she dedicates to commonplace surroundings of daily life leads to questions about the construction of our culture is truly commendable. Her current work focuses on the project of schooling and how our idiosyncratic humanness can break through within the constraints of educational institutions.

“I make observational paintings depicting institutional interiors and abstract pieces that allow me to investigate the internal tensions and contradictions of working within educational institutions,” she explained.
