Long-running Netflix show Queer Eye’s seventh season premiered on 12 May 2023. The premise of the show remains intact and the only thing that we see now is the place and the heroes. Dan Stein is one such hero the fab five (Jonathan Van Ness, Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Antoni Porowski, and Tan France) is ready to help with the makeover that he requires in his life.

Given that Dan is regarded locally as either the rudest or the most kind-hearted person ever, if there is one term that could possibly be used to characterize him, it would have to be “enigma”. Dan has been proudly running Stein’s Market & Deli for almost 15 years, during which time he has managed to make it (and himself) the focal point of the neighborhood. Although it may have been unintentional, he achieved this with outrageous advertising campaigns, ruthless honesty with clients, enormous portion sizes with no complaints, and unfailing compassion for people in need.
Dan was a workaholic through and through, spending more than 80 hours a week, seven days a week, at the deli, which is why he was nominated for a complete overhaul. At one point, this would have been OK, but everyone was concerned when he continued this behavior after entering his first serious relationship (ever) two years earlier. Truth be told, he was aware that Cara wanted more from their relationship than just sharing a bed, thus his nomination was motivated by his openness to change.
“[Dan] is so busy at the deli that he can’t change his clothes and shave his face,” Dan’s girlfriend explained in the show. “I’ve only taken Dan to one work event. He was late, and then he was wearing all of his deli clothes… He promptly sat down in one of the chairs and fell asleep.”
The Fab Five then intervened to help Dan understand that even the smallest acts, gestures, grooming, and style choices can have a big impact on both Cara and life in general. But what really made a difference was that this Pennsylvania native was taking their counsel to heart, was amenable to more criticism, and afterward expressed gratitude for the experience.
In other words, he effectively demonstrated that he would sacrifice anything for Cara if it made him a better man and more in tune with reality through his acquiescence and honest attempts to raise himself through his inquiries.
“I know I’m in a toxic, co-dependent relationship with the deli,” Dan said in the series at one point. “If I were Samson, the deli’s my hair. There’s this sort of frustration where you just say, ‘Is this all I have? Is this all I’m meant to do, is come to this place and never smell the roses and never take a break?'”
By the end, though, the transformed businessman had also decided he could occasionally move away from the deli’s front register to help his own connection with it after 15 years. He had also made a list of all the areas he felt he could improve in for Cara.
At the time of this article, Dan is still a doting business owner but is continuing to focus on his overall health, hobbies, and family as well.
