Danielle Harris, aka Chef DMH, is a contestant on Hulu’s newest cooking competition show Secret Chef which premiered on 29 June 2023.
Danielle’s path to the culinary world was traditional. Like many, she started as a dishwasher. She, however, worked her way up and now she gets to introduce herself as a chef, and business owner, and also of course a streaming star.

Danielle Harris On Hulu’s Secret Chef
The producers reached out to Danielle Harris Harris for Secret Chef via DM on social media. After a filmed interview, Danielle had to record a 20-minute, nonstop cooking video and was finally picked from the competitive pack of candidates. Yet, even until then, she had no idea what the show was about until cameras started rolling.
It was kind of “wild” she said. Like her, every contestant was genuinely surprised when they explored their own solitary kitchens.
The culinary game competition was filmed on-set in Atlanta over three weeks. The competitors were put through a series of challenges. To Danielle, those 12-hour filming days were exhausting but exciting. Surrounded by passionate chefs like herself, plus diverse production staff, she says the networking experience was a “rewarding one”. With the chefs she met on the show she keeps in touch via group chat.
One of the biggest challenges, of the whole process, Danielle recalled was judging the show’s food herself and having to brace her stomach for eating 10 plates at 10 a.m.
Danielle Harris Career
Per LinkedIn, Danielle Harris has been working as a chef-owner at Little Food Studio in Washington, District of Columbia since March 2021.
Also, since January 2018, she has been working as the founder and creative director at District Graze in Washington D.C. Metro Area and as the chef/owner of DMH and Company as of March 2015.
Starting as a dishwasher, Danielle worked her way up to sous chef, did a stint at art school, and then worked with Iron Chef Stephanie Izard in Chicago before coming to Washington D.C. in 2015.
Before this, between 2010 and 2015, Danielle went to Columbia College in Chicago.
After a stint at Capitol Hill’s short-lived Emilie’s, she took a leap during the pandemic and opened the carryout sandwich shop Little Food Studio in Petworth. She named the sandwiches here after her culinary muses, her mom, aunts, grandmothers, and partner.
Is Danielle Harris Married?
As of July 2023, Danielle Harris was most likely not married already. But, she had been in a relationship for very long, with Helen McDonald.
On 7 April 2023, the couple celebrated their sixth anniversary. Danielle on a social media post gushed about those six years being the best years of her life. She said it has been a journey that feels like forever and a second all at the same time.
Danielle’s partner Helen, on their IG @hmcdonald92, refers to their pronoun as ‘they/them’. Plus, on their IG, one can also see Helen talk about Danielle at great length. On 23 June 2018, Danielle and Helen signed a lease on their new apartment. They have been most likely living together ever since.
Among other things about Helen, Danielle also loves how they have dedicated themselves to survivors and marginalized folks within their communities. Once around June of 2019, Helen was at the VA Action Alliance’s Biennial Retreat giving their presentation – “We Are All Anarchists: Teaching from Trauma to Transformation”.
