The Girl from Plainville which premiered on Hulu on 29 March 2022 is an American drama miniseries that is based on real-life events. Created by Liz Hannah and Patrick Macmanus, the television series stars Elle Fanning in the leading role of Michelle Carter and Colton Ryan as Conrad “Coco” Roy III. Eventually, it was outed that in the weeks leading up to his suicide, Roy had exchanged several texts with his then 17-year-old long-distance girlfriend, Michelle. Based on these exchanges, Michelle was convicted in 2017 to have involuntarily encouraged him to end his life. This case was still not that big until HBO had its hand on it in the form of the documentary, I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter. Featuring interviews with Roy’s family, Carter’s lawyer, key witnesses, and journalists who covered the story and ensuing trial, it raised national questions about mental health. But notably, both Michelle and her parents declined to take part.
