Michelle Carter and Conrad Roy III met in 2012. Having both struggled with mental illness, they shortly find solitude in each other and fall into intense, texting all hours of the day and on again off again virtual romance. The almost electronic relationship continues for almost two years when on in July 2014, authorities discover the body of 18-year-old Conrad in his pickup truck.
In many of these text messages that come to light later during the trial of Conrad’s case, Michelle looks appears to be urging Conrad to kill himself. She actually appears to give him step-by-step instructions on how to do it, in these exchanges.
In February 2015, months after Roy ended his life, Michelle is indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter. Her trial is covered by nearly every major news outlet and just like that the infamous story even gets picked up by Hulu for a television series. Yes. Meet Gail Carter, Michelle Carter’s Mother
Michelle Carter’s parents, Gail and David Carter were present in court through Michelle’s entire trial. So, the Carters, who were by all accounts, fairly normal suburban parents have repeatedly defended their daughter.
Before Gail Carter knew that her daughter was involved in Conrad’s suicide, she showed support for the deceased Conrad’s mother, Lynn Roy. According to Esquire, in August 2014, she texted Lynn “I think about you, your family, and Conrad every day. My heart breaks for all of you, as well as for Michelle, who loved Conrad as much as a 17-year-old girl could.”
Both Gail and her husband have repeatedly defended their daughter. In March 2015, they released a statement to the Boston Herald, in which they said she was not the monster the public often called her. They carefully wrote, “Our hearts have and remain broken for the Roy family” before adding “For everyone that does not know our daughter, she is not the villain the media is portraying her to be. She is a quiet, kind, and sympathetic young girl. She tried immensely to help Mr. Roy in his battle with depression. We know that once all of the facts are released, our daughter will be found innocent.”
