HBO’s true crime series The Way Down explores Remnant Fellowship and its now-deceased leader Gwen Shamblin, whose big promises of weight loss through prayer hid an alleged culture of psychological and physical abuse.
The series is explored through the story of Glen and Cary Wingerd, whose teenage daughter Delaney Wingerd joined the Fellowship after being recruited by a high school boyfriend.

Delaney Wingerd is one of the subjects of The Way Down. However, she is not herself telling her story in this new HBO series but her parents are. And this is how their daughter Delaney fits into their story.
The way they put it, Delaney is a straight-A student, but not as independent as her two other siblings. When she first met her future boyfriend, Jackson Rector, during theater class, her mum encouraged her to not judge him just because he was a member of Remnant Fellowship. At the time, the Wingerds were aware that the members of this church were considered weird but they did not know any concerning details about the group beyond that.
Delaney’s parents continued to tell that by 2016 they had realized there was something off about their relationship. And around this time, they were also aware of some of the most disturbing information about Remnant. They said the senior year was kind of traumatic for Delaney. When confronted about it, they knew the boyfriend intended to convert Delaney to his Remnant Fellowship. The Wingerds, therefore, told the couple to end the relationship. Delaney still continued to see him in private, her parents found scripts that Jackson wrote as instructions on how to answer questions about Remnant, and the church leaders gave her a burner phone to use. So basically, Delaney was being coached to be deceptive. She was told there was evil in her house, shadows, and darkness.

Indeed! Delaney Wingerd is still alive. And no, she did not board the plane that crashed into Percy Priest Lake back on 29 May 2021. Gwen Shamblin Lara and six church leaders, including her husband Joe and son-in-law Brandon Hannah, were killed when her 1982 Cessna Citation 501 private jet met with the mishap shortly after takeoff on that day.

But then on Facebook, Delaney again marked the 5th of June 2021 as their wedding day.
On the website, though she also describes that to her Jackson is the biggest blessing in life as he points her to God in all situations and reminds her to grow in righteousness. She insists that she is looking forward to a lifetime with Jackson, and a lifetime of living out the words of the Bible together.

Delaney Wingerd’s parents are Glen Wingerd (dad) and Carey Wingerd (mum) of Brentwood Tennessee.
Married to his wife since 1994, Glen, 50-year-old as of August 2021, is currently a director of IT Quality Assurance at Tractor Supply Co; formerly a director of Quality Assurance and Testing at Asurion and also an ex-manager of Quality Assurance and Testing at ERCOT. The Wingerd patriarch back in the day studied BS in Management Information Systems at the University of Phoenix and also went to Wichita State University.
As for Carey, she turned 48 in February 2022 and she is self-employed as per her LinkedIn.
