Gwen Shamblin is the subject of the new HBO Max documentary, The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin. Its first three episodes premiered in September 2021 her rise to fame as the founder of a Christian diet program, before she became the leader of a cult-like church. And the 28 April 2022 dropped final two episodes delved into the investigation and aftermath of the May 2021 plane crash. The American author and founder of the Christian diet program The Weigh Down Workshop and the Remnant Fellowship had tragically died alongside six others, including her husband Joe Lara, in the plane crash.

HBO Max’s The Way Down also mentions her children Michael and Elizabeth Shamblin, who the now-deceased mother shared with her first husband David Shamblin.
Gwen had married David Shamblin in 1978; welcomed two kids; divorced in 2018 after. The same year, Gwen married William Joseph Lara, an actor.
Anyway, both Michael and Elizabeth have reportedly held leadership roles within their mother’s church; with Michael helping to lead worship services and music performances for the church and Elizabeth leading the Remnant Fellowship youth group.
Unlike his sister Elizabeth, who has remained loyal to her mother’s church, Michael has been away frequently during adulthood. Once, when he needed to pursue his music career. Then the other time, due to Michael’s struggles with his mental health, multiple infidelities, and weight fluctuations, his participation within the church has varied over time.
In fact, a former Remnant Fellowship member tells in The Way Down that Michael felt trapped by his familial obligations to Remnant Fellowship.
Where Is Michael Shamblin Today?
Less is known about where Michael Shamblin is and involvement with Remnant Fellowship Church is difficult to establish. His website, however, seemed to imply that he continued producing music for and serving as one of the worship leaders at Remnant Fellowship.
Moreover, former members of the church also reveal in Part Two of The Way Down that he has since divorced his wife; that his name has also been entirely removed from their church’s website.

Despite being mentioned one too many times, Michael Shamblin has not featured on HBO’s On The Way Down.
In a statement released following the plane crashing into Percy Priest Lake in Smyrna that also took Elizabeth’s husband Brandon Shannon’s life, it was said that Gwen’s surviving children intend to continue her dream. Things like these have been covered by On The Way Down and that is when Michael and his sibling are being mentioned.
Like Michael, Elizabeth has four kids, Grace, Gweneth, Gloria, and Charles Grantham; all of them, she shared with her late husband Brandon who breathed his last air beside her mother and stepfather. She had a fifth child, who unfortunately did not make it. And before Gwen passed away, Elizabeth likely lived with her family in her mom’s owned Ashlawn, a historic mansion in Brentwood, Tennessee.
