Meet Delores Floyd, Fani Willis Mother
Delores Floyd is the mother of Fulton County DA Fani Willis. In fact, she is her stepmother.
Delores and Fani’s father John Clifford Floyd III married in 1989. The marriage was Delores’s second as she was previously married to Mr. Bobby Sumner. Delores met her ex-husband at Cardozo SHS. They wedded on 27 February 1960. The couple then welcomed two children Mr. Bobby Sumner, Jr. (Diane) and Ms. Julie Sumner.
However, their marriage ended in June 1984.
As for John and Delores, the two loved to travel and made several journeys outside of the United States. The couple traveled to France, England, and Africa. They also made a cross-country journey driving from DC to California. Political causes were another interest they shared, hosting or participating in several campaigns and fund-raiser events.
Devout Catholics, the couple went to mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine most Sundays. As season ticket holders, many Sunday afternoons mass was followed by a Redskins football game.
Fani was mostly reared by her father, a criminal defense attorney and activist for black rights who was also a member of the Black Panthers. Prior to earning a law degree from Emory University in Georgia in 1996, she completed her undergraduate studies at the historically black Howard University in 1993. Five years later, Ms. Willis started working for the Fulton County District Attorney’s office, where she remained until 2018.
Fani presided over more than 100 jury trials over her nearly two decades there, including the longest criminal trial in Georgia history. 11 out of 12 Atlanta public school employees who had been suspected of using cheating techniques on state-administered standardized tests in 2009 to gain greater bonuses and promotions were found guilty in the end.
According to Ms. Redmon, she gained a reputation as an unusually skilled prosecutor among the accused fast as a result of her successful trials. Ms. Redmon recalls hearing a defendant once beg a relative to attempt to convince a witness to leave town since the prosecutor handling their case, Ms. Willis, was “a genius” when she worked at the district attorney’s office. After her employment at the company came to an end, Ms. Willis worked in private practice for a while. Then, in 2020, she made the decision to challenge Paul Howard, the six-term district attorney for Fulton County, her former boss.
She received 73% of the vote in the runoff, becoming the first black woman to hold the position of chief prosecutor in Fulton County. As the district attorney for Fulton County, she is in charge of investigating crimes that occur in the county, determining whether charges should be filed, and bringing cases to court.

Delores Floyd was a retired DC public school teacher. Her first teaching assignment was as a classroom teacher at Charles Drew Elementary.
Delores worked as a teacher in a number of DC institutions, such as Keene, Walker-Jones, and Myers Tri-school Learning Academy. She quit the DC public school system after 34 years and started teaching social studies at the Presbyterian School. She would continue working there on a part-time basis for an additional 8 years.
Delores served as the President of the DC Reading Council and was recognized in 1975 as one of the best elementary school teachers in the country.
The Basketball Reading Incentive Camp (BRIC) at H.D. Woodson SHS was one of her favorite initiatives.
Delores went to public schools in Washington, D.C., and she graduated from Cardozo Senior High School in 1956. Later, she graduated from D.C. Teachers College, realizing a lifetime ambition to teach elementary school. In 1957, Mrs. Floyd joined the sorority Delta Sigma Theta while still a student. She later enrolled at George Washington University and earned a master’s degree in elementary education there.
