Meet Eileen Gu Mother, Yan Gu

Yan Gu is Eileen’s mother who immigrated from China 30 years before to pursue her higher education. She was a former ski instructor at a resort near Lake Tahoe. At the age of 3, Yan took her daughter skiing for the first time. They lived several hours from the slope around Lake Tahoe.

Skiing became little more than a weekend pursuit. Yan Gu also spent a few years as a part-time ski instructor at Northstar and bought a condo nearby.

Yan always took care of her and her daughter’s position on social media. She told the Chinese news media in 2015 that Eileen was sponsored by Beijing Nanshan ski resort (her current biography with the international ski federation lists it as her home resort) and that they were friends with Lu Jian, the resort’s founder and a pioneer in the fledgling Chinese ski industry.

Before New York Times published their article on Eileen, she had reviewed it once before publishing it so that it wouldn’t affect their position where she and her daughter stands according to the perspective of Chinese people.

After having Eileen, Yan Gu dated a man named Ray Sidney, who went viral as an alleged father of Eileen. They dated for several years after having her.

Ray wrote in a comment, “Josh Sher Perhaps I should clarify: Yan (Eileen’s mom) and I dated for several years. I’ve known Eileen for many years, and I’ve very proud of all that she’s accomplished, both on and off the snow. I did not meet Yan until sometime after Eileen was born.”

But, although Yan dated a few of them after her relationship ended with Eileen’s father and Ray, she chose to remain quiet about her relationship status.

In May 1993, Yan Gu landed a Summer Associate Investment Banking job at Lehman Brothers. Her job in the company only lasted for 4 months. In September 1994, she joined Bankers Trust as a Derivatives Trader and worked for the company till September 1996.

Immediately after leaving Bankers Trust, Yan landed the job of Managing Director at ITIM Asia Inc in the San Francisco Bay Area. She served in that role for four years then stepped down from her job in September 2000. She left the company to work as Managing Director at California Technology Investment Inc.

Yan worked for the company for 11 and a half years till February 2012.

Then, she joined K2 Advisors as Managing Director/Head of China where she only worked for a little over a year.

Starting from September 2013, Yan has been working as a Private Investor and Expert in China Investment for Fusion Investment Inc.

Where Did Yan Gu Recieve Her Education?

Yan Gu studied Physical Chemistry and Bio-Chemistry at Peking University in the 1980s. Then, she immigrated to the United States to earn her degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and joined Auburn University. In 1989, he enrolled at New York’s Rockefeller University and graduated in 1992 with a degree in Molecular Genetics.

After that, Yan enrolled at Stanford University Graduate School of Business and graduated in 1994.
