Who Are John Leguizamo Parents?

Actor John Leguizamo was born to his parents Alberto and Luz Leguizamo on 22 July 1960. They welcomed him in Bogota, Colombia. He was a 4-year-old boy when his family immigrated to America.

The Colombian native aspired to direct films before abandoning his studies because he lacked funds. Alberto, his wife, Luz, and their family eventually migrated to the United States where the proud man had to settle for menial jobs. Life was not easy. Even so, Alberto never surrendered. Alberto never gave in to how society saw him. And that example inspired John.

John’s parents filed for divorce when he was 14 years old after deciding to call it quits. But they didn’t stop him from pursuing his ambition to work in the entertainment industry.

He has three siblings named Sergio, Emily, and Marie Leguizamo.

John was raised in Queens, New York, attended New York University, and spent just one day studying acting with the late Lee Strasberg, who was a great acting coach. Prior to playing a liquor store thief who shoots Harrison Ford in Regarding Henry, he had small appearances in Mixed Blood, Casualties of War, and Die Hard 2.

Meet Alberto Leguizamo, John Leguizamo Father

John Leguizamo’s father Alberto Leguizamo made headlines in 2011 when Alberto claimed that his son was misleading fans about the family’s heritage. Alberto reportedly told a newspaper that he was of Colombian roots while John claimed that he is of Puerto Rican roots.

“I am Colombian-Puerto Rican, I don’t know why he’s saying that. I say that I love him, and why is he saying that?” John said. However, El Diario, a newspaper Alberto spoke to, claimed that the older Leguizamo showed papers that he was born in Colombia. Moreover, he had wanted to “clarify the situation” and claimed he had no Puerto Rican family members.

“It hurts me that John is lying to the Puerto Ricans and not backing up his Colombian roots,” he told the newspaper. In an interview at Sunday’s parade posted on YouTube, Leguizamo said his father was born in Colombia, “but his father was Puerto Rican.”

In his 2006 autobiography, John describes his parents’ thick Colombian accents and says he was born in the South American nation. He calls himself a “Puerto Rican-Colombian homeboy from Queens” in one chapter but refers to himself as a Puerto Rican in another. Moreover, during Tony Awards monologue, he said both of his parents had immigrated to the United States from Colombia.

According to El Diario, Alberto was born in Colombia in 1936. This makes him 86 years old in 2022. Asked why he was coming forth now, he said, “I thought John had laid this to rest. I spoke to him about this two years ago and he said he was going to do it.”

“It hurts me that [John] lies to the Puerto Ricans and doesn’t stand behind his Colombian roots,” he added.

John and Alberto’s relationship was reportedly strained for a few years, according to WashingtonPost. “My father and I are actually closer now than we’ve been in years.” While doing “Freak,” John was surprised one night by his father’s appearance backstage (they had stopped speaking to each other four years earlier). “I was in the dressing room after the show,” he recalled, “and I see this face, seething red. He ran out. I chased him. We argued and yelled for about an hour and a half. He cried. I hugged him. We said the required ‘I love you’s.”

John said, “We had a symbiotic relationship. My father had a short temper; I needed to set it off. ‘Hey Dad, how many jobs you lose this year? I could do a report for school. Five? Six?'”

The comedian’s father was once an aspiring film director and studied at Cinecittà but eventually dropped out due to lack of finances.

Meet Luz Leguizamo, John Leguizamo Mother

According to Washington Post, Luz Leguizamo AKA Luz Marina Pelaez is Colombian with Indian ancestry. She was born in 1941. During the monologues of “Spic-O-Rama,” he touched on his mother’s resentment at being saddled with caring for John and his younger brother, Serge.

Along with other family members, his mother wasn’t happy about him making his routines autobiographical. John also shared that his mother was at first offended, then apologetic, and finally grew to love the show — and the attention.

The mother-son duo was also featured in NewYorker’s February 1999 issue.
