John “Sleepy” Moran describes himself as “a politically and socially engaged hot glass sculptor, mixed media artist, co-founder and operator at Gent Glas, and all around nice guy”. John Moran On Netflix’s Blown Away Season 3
A group of professional glassblowers has joined Netflix’s show Blown Away in season 3. The competition is going to be fiery as these contestants try to compete to become the “best in glass”. The first season of the made its way to the screen for the first time in 2019. Since then, the success of the show opened doors for its successive season including festivities special.
The presenters of the show this season are Nick Uhas and Katherine Gray. Season 3 of the show premiered on 22 July 2022.
John Moran, one of the casts in the show, joined the competition all confident. He doesn’t want to brag that he is certain he is going to win the show. Joining him are the other nine contestants Trenton Quiocho, Rob Stern, Claire Kelly, Maddy Hughes, Dan Friday, Brenna Baker, Minhi England, John Sharvin, and Grace Whiteside.
John Moran Career/Work
According to his LinkedIn, John Moran started his glass art in 1998. He has been working as a glass artist for 24 years co-owning and running Gent Glas since 2013. His company currently has more than 20 artists hailing from Belgium, France, Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, and the U.S.
In a 2018 interview, John stated that on a goodnight, his shop pulls in 60 or 70 people and around 20 people on a slow night which contributes to the cultural aspect of Ghent. He also stated that his goal was to open the place 3 or 4 days a week rather than 1 day a week with the help of subsidies.
John added, “Our hope is that someday that this place runs without us and we are able to be a part of the studio and there’s a community and a manager that’s managing all the things that we’re doing now, and that would just grow into a bigger, broader community.”
John has done solo exhibitions since 2011 at Dylan Gallery. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Hodge Gallery. Pittsburgh Glass Center, MFA Thesis Exhibition. University Galleries. Normal, Illinois, Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts. Wilmington, Delaware, S12 Gallery. Bergen, Norway, and SIC Galleries of Contemporary Art. Wroclaw, Poland among a few other places.
Moreover, John has also received more than 20 awards, residencies, and grants.
Besides blowing glasses, John also went to China where he taught English for a year and a half after art school. After returning to the U.S. to resume work blowing glass, he befriended a Belgian glass maker. She invited him to do a residency and to teach in Belgium in 2010. He traveled between Belgium and U.S. frequently, finally moving in 2013.
John attended He is a Ph.D. candidate at The Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław, Poland.
John also trained at Pilchuck Glass School and Haystack Mountain School of Craft in 2001.
Fun Fact — He earned the name “Sleepy” in the very first glass class he took. At the time, he was working a night shift job and going to school during the day. The exhaustion would catch up with him in the warmth of the glass demonstrations and he would fall asleep.

John was born to his mother Kathy Moran. Kathy, a native of Havertown, Pennsylvania is currently residing in Charlotte, North Carolina. Kathy writes that she was widowed early, raised 3 kids, now has 5 beautiful granddaughters, 5 wonderful grandsons also 2 wonderful sons-in-law.
Moreover, Kathy is a member of St. Elizabeth Anne Seton Parish in Bear, Delaware, and Alumni of Cardinal O’Hara High in Springfield, PA (Mullner). She obtained her Master’s in Nursing from the University of Delaware and was credentialled as a Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist. She is now retired.
