Dan Friday On Netflix’s Blown Away Season 3

Dan Friday is competing against 9 other professional glass blowers in season 3 of Netflix’s Blown Away. He and his family are the members of Lummi Nation. So, Dan Friday has grown up around traditional Native American and Lummi Tribe artistic practices his entire life. In his own work, he immortalizes these traditional artistic practices in the new contemporary art format of glass, making his work both of the moment and grounded in the past.

Talking about how he got into glassblowing, Dan shared in an interview, “When I saw glass blowing for the first time, it felt as though I grew an inch… That is to say, a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. I had finally figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up. This was no small feat for someone who, as a youth, was rebellious and misguided. In spite of my colorful past, and by the grace of a loving community, I found my passion in glass”.

The third season of the program debuted on July 22, 2022.

Dan Friday Career/Work

Dan Friday has been working as a glass artist for more than 25 years. During the State of Glass interview, he stated that he has worked in every shop in the Seattle area. He typically works with simple themes and forms and often employs subtle silhouettes when making his totems.

According to his resume, Dan first joined The Glass Eye Studio in 1997. He worked from design to maintenance to fabrication, overall aspects of the industry. He worked there until 1999. Then, he went freelance collaborating and assisting prominent artists such as James Drake, Nicolas Africano, Wendy Maruyama, and Charles Ledray in the creation of, major glass art commissions and installations.

He also briefly worked as a personal assistant to Paul Marioni.

As of 2022, Dan has been working at Dale Chiluly Boathouse Studio (since 2000), Tacoma Glass Museum (since 2004), Works as a Teacher, Gaffer, and Coordinator for the Hot Shop at Pilchuck Glass School (since 2006), and James Mongrain (since 2009). He is also the owner of Friday Glass since 2007 which is located in Seattle’s historic Fremont district.

In Seattle Washington, Dan has exhibited his work in various shows like Day Break Star in 2002, 2009, and 2010, Lawrimore Project in 2011, Urban Lights Studios in 2012, and Pilchuck Glass School Gallery in 2016. He has also done an international exhibition in Star Gallery in Taiwan.

Besides running his own business and working for others, Dan worked as a teacher at Coyote Junior High (1988-1993), Art by Fire (2002-2006), Seattle Glassblowing Studios (2004-2007), Pilchuck Glass School (2014), Evergreen State College Longhouse (2015), and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (2016).

What Do We Know About Dan Friday Family?

Dan Friday was born to his parents Charles Henry “Chuck” Friday and Laurel Friday as one of three children. His father, Chuck, served in the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam war. Not much is known about his mother Laurel.

Dan had one brother named Rueben Hillaire who died a while back. Now, he has a sister named Rachel “Ray” Friday. Ray is also a glass sculptor who also works in mixed media and worked at Pilchuck Glass School. Ray attended Roosevelt High School and Seattle Central Community College. Moreover, she trained to be a sculptor at Alfred University and graduated in 2006.

Moreover, Rachel is currently studying at The Evergreen State College.

More about Dan’s family, his great-grandfather Joe Hillaire was a renowned totem pole carver in Seattle who was a huge inspiration to Dan. Friday’s great-great-grandfather was also an influential Lummi tribal artist. He established a popular dance troupe in the 1930s that went on to perform at the World’s Fair in 1962, where he also had a Totem Pole commissioned and displayed.

Dan’s aunt continued the tradition of artistic expression through her baskets and was a Lummi Master Weaver, some of her blankets can now be seen featured in the Smithsonian in DC. In Friday’s own work, a series of woven glass baskets forever pay homage to his aunt and are known as Aunt Fran’s Baskets Series.
