A self-described “Ambitious, gregarious, adaptable,” Karla Cruz Godoy shared that she wanted to compete in Survivor 43, one to win. Watching the show, she would say, “I would do this differently. What if this person did that? I wish I could be there.” Karla told Parade, “And I’ve just always been the type of person to go for it. If that’s something you want to do, then just do it. And so I mustered up the courage, and I was like, “Let me just apply.” And I did.”
She added, “And here I am! But also, I saw this lack of representation for queer women of color and Chicanas and Latinas in the show, and I was like, “I need to be there. We need to change things up a bit.” So that’s why Survivor.”
Talking about a non-winner she recognizes, Karla replied: Cirie Fields. She explained why “I love her. I feel like she’s a favorite for a lot of people. But I identify with her the most because I’m a plus-sized woman, and it’s really hard to see plus-sized women on Survivor. It took a lot of guts for me to apply. I was really scared because of the perception. I don’t want people to see me and be like, “Oh, this girl’s weak.”

Coming to why she believes that she would win the show, Karla added, “I’m adaptable, resilient, gregarious, and my ancestors have my back. I’m confident in my social game, that I’ll build relationships across differences and get along with just about anyone. With my wife and family in my heart and thoughts, I know I will make it to the end.”

Karla considers her grandfather Elizafat Godoy as her hero. Karla Cruz Godoy is a teacher, activist, and ardent supporter of the goals and principles of Big Picture. She fell in love with Big Picture Learning after her own experience as a 2012 graduate of the San Diego Met. Karla received a B.A. in Gender and Women’s Studies and Education as a Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholar from UC Berkeley.
She was motivated to address educational inequity by working as a secondary ELA teacher in the classroom. Karla enrolled in the teacher residency program Urban Teachers in Washington, D.C., in 2016, and began teaching at the high school level while pursuing a Master of Science in Education (M.S. Ed) at Johns Hopkins University.
Karla is currently working as Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Big Picture Learning Alumni Association since 2020. Meanwhile, she is also serving as Special Projects Manager.
Karla serves as the Special Assistant to the Co-Executive Director at Big Picture Learning, where she provides strategic and programmatic support for a variety of projects including, but not limited to the Deep Learning Equity Fellowship, Ashe Leaders Fellowship, development/fundraising, and BPL’s annual international conferences.
