Katurah Topps did not grow up watching Survivor, unlike most other competitors of the show. But, when her adult eyes discovered it late (in 2020) she also learned that she could “expletive” love this show. So, she binge-watched it for a few years, and one day after having really rough and tiring time at work she found herself questioning “Why are you just watching this? Why haven’t you applied?..”. Of course, she listened to the voice right away and now we have her as one of the contestants on Survivor 45.
Katurah Topps On Survivor 45
Katurah Topps was inspired to try out for Survivor as she realized that her work takes up so much of her time that she can barely recall the last time she had an adventure. This was, she thought, her chance to do something for herself and show what she is made of.
When she was asked, “What’s one life experience you feel has prepared you most for the game?”, by parade.com, Katurah said there is not one thing specifically. The whole experience of walking the planet as a queer Black woman, she said made her most prepared for Survivor,
Katurah was introduced to watchers as someone competing as an original member of the Belo tribe. There were 17 others joining her on this journey. Together, they were divided into three tribes: Belo, Lulu, and Reba.
Once in Survivor 45, Katurah was expecting to gravitate towards people so loyal that it becomes “unrelenting loyalty to the point where it’s illogical.” She was basically planning to “charm the pants off everybody” by making them think she is just a “sweet, small-town girl”.
Katurah, when asked to share who she identifies with one winner and one non-winner each from the show from the previous seasons, she said she has one name for both of those and that is Natalie.
So, Katurah decided to go on this show inspired by people like Natalie and some carefully laid plans, while also prepared with the possibility that the response to it could be either overwhelmingly positive or overwhelmingly negative.
Katurah Topps Job
Katurah is a civil rights lawyer. She has been working as the Policy Counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF) and a core member of LDF’s Justice in Public Safety Project in New York, New York since July 2018. Before that, she was a Co-Founder and Litigation Associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP for two years. For a year, she also served as the Law Clerk to the Honorable Gerald Bruce Lee (Rocket Docket) in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia.
In 2015, Katurah earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) Law from Georgetown University Law Center. Between 2007 and 2011, she was at Saint Louis University studying for a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Philosophy and French.
Lately, when people on Parade asked her if her civil rights work predates her law career, Katurah explained she has been involved in the civil rights side of the law since before she was a lawyer. As a result of this, she said, she has been an attorney for about eight years now. Even though civil rights work has always been her passion and focus, she did not always have the choice to jump right into it because she also needed to get her bills paid working at the big law firms. But, now, having done her dues with that, she is proud to be working at one of the top civil rights law firms in the country.
With parade.com, Katurah also recently confirmed that she has still got her student loan of $500,000.
