However, it’s still uncommon for non-artists to create parodies of obscure musical styles that, despite all odds, become unexpected hits before they’re even released.
This is what happened when, on July 28, singer-influencer Audrey Trullinger and comedian Kyle Gordon produced a video clip titled “Every European Dance Song in the 1990s.” The whole song, titled “Planet of the Bass,” was originally scheduled to be released on Spotify on August 22 but was bumped up a week to August 15 due to its extreme popularity on TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram.
It also made its live debut last night in a Brooklyn nightclub. The video, which resonated with millennials who had a soft spot for a very particular era of pop culture, got 5 million views on TikTok and almost 90 million views on Twitter as of the time of publication.
With his character impressions of “the kid who’s no fun,” white hip-hop reviewers, and foreign representations of Americans, Gordon first became popular on TikTok in 2020. The inspiration behind “Planet of the Bass,” a delightfully absurd parody of ’90s Eurodance songs in which a beautiful woman sings about love and unity while a deep-voiced rapper hypes the crowd in awkward English, is “DJ Crazy Times,” a European DJ from the turn of the millennium.

All of these women lip-synced on purpose, but they delightfully played the part of Ms. Biljana Electronica, a fictitious Eurodance pop queen. For the song, Kyle recorded three different TikTok videos. In each video, he played DJ Crazy Times, but he chose a different woman to be the star.
Over seven million people have seen the inaugural “Planet of the Bass” TikTok, which was shot inside the World Trade Center’s Oculus. Audrey Trullinger, an actress and content producer, played Ms. Biljana Electronica. Mara Olney, a content creator, played the part of Ms. Biljana Electronica in the second video, which Kyle said was shot in Croatia.
In the third video, YouTube comedian and actress Sabrina Brier took over the role of Ms. Biljana. Kyle said that “Planet of the Bass” would be released as an official single on August 15, 2023, in light of its popularity on TikTok.
