Matt Gould is a writer and a composer who actively helped the Ugandan orphans be able to go to school. And as they say, “good things happen to good people”, it was on his journey to helping others that he stumbled upon his husband, the She-Hulk star, Griffin Matthews.

Meet Matt Gould, Griffin Matthews Husband
Matt Gould served in the Peace Corps in West Africa. But when he returned to the States, Matt just couldn’t forget what happened there and was depressed about “the state of affairs in the world.” So, wanting to help the Ugandan people; especially the kids, he started looking around until one of his friends told him about “this guy who was helping African kids” — who happened to be Griffin Matthews.
“The first time I saw him, he had dreadlocks down to his butt, and I thought he was the most beautiful man I’d ever seen,” Matt recalled.
Thereafter, Matt and Griffin started their official journey to help the Ugandan kids in 2008, and as the She-Hulk star kept accompanying Matt for years, he knew Griffin was a keeper.
However, as the two came from opposite backgrounds — Griffin, an African-American Christian, and Matt, a white Jewish-American man — did struggle with the difference between their respective roots. And it wasn’t until their trip to Germany the epiphany hit them — “blacks, Jews, gays, all would have been killed on that land 70 years ago.”
Fast forward to January 21, 2017, the lovebirds then tied the knot in an intimate ceremony. “It was the happiest day of my life. Except for the next day and the next day and the next day…,” Matt recalled his wedding.
Also, he shared that the reason he married Griffin was to show “Griffin and the world how much (he) could love.” But that wasn’t all, he added that he married the She-Hulk actor because Griffin could see the parts he never wanted to show — “the parts that are ugly; that feed my insecurity and pain. The parts that somehow I grew up believing weren’t worthy of coming to light. The parts that when left unchecked, turn me into the worst of myself,” he explained.
Did you know: The anti-gay legislation in Uganda was just passed in October 2007. And since it was fairly new, Matt and Griffin, who were enmeshed in the culture, tried to respect the physical boundaries and never slept in the same bed.
Matt Gould Kids
Matt Gould has two sons named Galileo and Apollo.
Their kid, Apollo was born on July 27, 2020, and adopted by Matt and Griffin just 5 days later.
While Galileo (born December 26, 2017) was adopted in 2018.
Talking about parenting, Matt shared that just because Galileo and Apollo “weren’t his kids, it didn’t mean they weren’t loved”. Also, he revealed that their boys were raised in the foster care system from birth. So, they weren’t allowed to show Matt and Griffin’s faces on social media.
But Matt’s not just the father of two. In Uganda, they called Matt and Griffin the “tatas,” which means dads. So, they’ve put on the dad hats for many.
Matt Gould Age
Matt Gould was 43 years of age in 2022. He is three years older than his husband Griffin.
Fun Fact: Griffin called Matt, Matthew “Patience” Gould — an ironic testament to that which he lacked.
Matt Gould Job
Matt Gould is a writer and composer-lyricists dedicated to helping Ugandan orphans receive an education. He started his journey in 2005 just trying to help some kids at a local orphanage. But soon, he then wound up starting his own nonprofit to support 10 orphans who couldn’t afford to pay for school.
In 2008, after meeting Griffin, the two then organized their first benefit concert, a “musical infomercial” as Gould described it, to raise money. And eventually, they created a musical Witness Uganda a.k.a. Invisible Thread based on the struggles of Griffin’s organization UgandaProject, which he founded in 2005.
Their docu-musical even received the Richard Rodgers Award as well as ASCAP’s Harold Adamson Lyric Award and Michelle and Dean Kay Award in 2021.
Now, Matt has been visiting Uganda, supporting Ugandan students, and sharing stories about the complexity of helping, for over 10 years.
Before turning to the life of helping and writing, Matt was a Peace Corps volunteer in The Islamic Republic of Mauritania from 2001 to 2003. As for Griffin, he only visited Uganda in 2005 on an aid trip.
As for his education, Matt’s a graduate of Boston University’s College of Fine Arts.
Besides “Invisible Thread” from Witness Uganda, Matt has also worked on tracks like Amancay, Sweat: Movement IV, and Romantica Passione Suite (multiple tracks).
