Three arrest warrants were filed in relation to the fight that broke out on the Montgomery Riverfront on Saturday, August 5, according to an announcement made by Montgomery Police Chief Darryl Albert on Tuesday, August 8. Three white men were the suspects, according to Chief Daryl, who also stated that one of the men was in jail and the other two were expected to turn themselves in.
Zachary Shipman, 25, Richard Roberts, 48, and Allen Todd, 23 were accused of third-degree assault. Along with the three white suspects, Chief Daryl said that a 42-year-old black man named Reggie Gray was also wanted for interrogation after being seen in a viral video holding a chair.
Following the police’s designation of Reggie Gray as a possible person of interest in the case, online users supported the black guy. Social media users have reacted favorably to the comments, with one writing, “Leave the “Chairman” alone.”
After videos of the racially charged encounter went viral online and received millions of views, authorities finally identified the reason behind the Montgomery Riverfront brawl on Tuesday. According to the authorities, the altercation started when the white pontoon boat owners refused to move their boat so the black dock worker, who was later identified as co-captain of the riverboat, Damien Pickett, could dock.
Reggie, who leaped in to defend Pickett, was shown on numerous recordings of the altercation holding a chair. Social media users worried about potential legal implications urged Gray to start a legal fund through GoFundMe as soon as police said he was needed for questioning in relation to the event.
