Meet Rex Heuermann, The Long Island Serial Killer Suspect
Rex Heuermann has been identified as the Long Island serial killer. According to Suffolk County authorities, a serial murderer was living among the Massapequa Park inhabitants.
In what became known as the Gilgo Beach Killings, they accused Rex of leaving a quarter-mile trail of young women’s remains on the South Shore of Long Island. They claimed that because he was so meticulous about hiding his tracks, it took them over 15 years to apprehend him.
And it goes without saying that his neighbors have information to tell about him. Some of his neighbors thought he was simply another commuter in a suit, while others thought he was a danger to the neighborhood.
According to the New York Times, he swung an ax at neighbors while scowling in the front yard of a low-slung, decaying property that parents warned their kids to stay away from on Halloween. “We would cross the street,” said Nicholas Ferchaw, a neighbor of Rex told the outlet. “He was somebody you don’t want to approach.”
Rex’s friends and clients in the real estate business were flabbergasted by the news. However, his other neighbor Mr. Ferchaw told the New York Times, “I wasn’t surprised at all — because of all the creepiness.”
On Thursday night in Midtown, Rex was taken into custody. He made a brief appearance at a Suffolk County courthouse where he was charged with three charges of first-degree murder and told to remain in custody without bail. Rex denied carrying out the killings, according to his attorney, who spoke outside the courthouse.
Mike Schmidt, a ten-year resident of the area, has a friend who resides behind Mr. Heuermann. Occasionally, Mr. Schmidt would go over to his friend’s house, drink a few drinks in the backyard, and “say He probably has bodies there.”
Mike and his friend decided to take their kids trick-or-treating at Mr. Heuermann’s house on Halloween 2022 just to see inside. They were taken aback when Rex personally opened the door and presented each child with a tiny plastic pumpkin filled to the brim with candy. The candy was forced to be thrown out by Rex’s wife after she discovered where it came from.
According to the prosecution, Rex made a string of insulting calls to Melissa Barthelemy’s family in 2009 from places close to his office after killing the 24-year-old escort.
The application to add a new fire escape to a building in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, was submitted by Rex in June 2010, about two weeks after Megan Waterman, a 22-year-old Maine woman, was last seen alive. Nine days before Amber Lynn Costello, 27, vanished near her home a few miles away, he submitted an application to repair the terra cotta and repoint the bricks at a building on the Upper West Side in August of that year.
The investigation dragnet was getting tighter on March 9, 2022, and Rex was drafting a customarily thorough letter to a lawyer about a project on West 71st Street:
“It appears that from my walk though, the drain line is above the interior floor slab and if the trench drain is placed below this level, it would not be able to drain by gravity,” he wrote. “I would strongly recommend an investigation into the use of negative side waterproofing at this site.”
Five days after that, investigators figured out that Rex had owned the same model pickup truck that a witness said Ms. Costello’s killer had driven. Two weeks later, prosecutors said, Rex googled “Long Island serial killer” and viewed an article headlined “New Task Force Aims to Solve Long Island Serial Killer Case.’”
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney confirmed that Heuermann is under arrest in a news conference on July 14, 2023. “These young women went missing between July 2007 and September 2010. They were found in September 2010 by the Suffolk County Police Department and then there was nothing, absolutely nothing. For the next 13 years, their cases went unsolved. Until today,” Tierney said.
According to NBC News, Heuermann’s attorney, Michael J. Brown, told reporters that Heuermann maintains his innocence and called the accusations “extremely circumstantial in nature.” “The only thing he did say, as he was in tears, was ‘I didn’t do this,'” Michael said, according to NBC News. “He’s distraught. He’s clearly distraught about the charges here.”

Rex Heuermann Job
Rex Heuermann is an accomplished architectural consultant who considers himself to be an authority on the complexities of New York City’s building code. His precise instructions impressed some clients while driving others insane. He worked at a building not far from the Empire State.
American Airlines, Catholic Charities, and the city’s Department of Environmental Protection were among Rex’s clients, according to his resume and the website of his business, RH Consultants & Associates. He frequently appeared on behalf of clients before the Landmark Preservation Commission and took credit for hundreds of applications that were approved by city agencies.
Rex spent roughly 30 years working with Steve Kramberg, a property manager in Brooklyn, who described him as “a gem to deal with, highly knowledgeable.” Rex was “a big goofy guy, a little bit on the nerdy side” who worked long hours and was available day and night, Steve said. But he was also devoted to his wife, who Mr. Kramberg said had health problems, and to his elderly mother.
Some people didn’t like Rex Heuermann’s punctilious demeanor at work. Mr. Heuermann was hired by a Brooklyn Heights co-op board to oversee repairs, but Kelly Parisi, the board’s former president, claimed he was “adversarial with everyone” and so “overly fastidious” that the board eventually fired him.
Paul Teitelbaum, another former president of the building’s board, described him as “a really kind of cold and distant person, kind of creepy.” He added, “There was a swagger — ‘I’m the expert, you’re lucky to have me.'”
But one man’s arrogant demands were another’s eye for detail. “He was very good at shepherding things through,” Rex said.
According to the timeline released by prosecutors and to the Buildings Department and court records, Rex kept up his busy work schedule even as victims were vanishing. The website lists Target and Foot Locker stores among its recent projects.
