Russell Ellis On Survive The Raft

Survive The Raft is a new reality show that places nine Americans of diverse races, geographic areas, and religious and political beliefs on a 60-foot-by-40-foot barge on the Pacific Ocean near the Pearl Islands of Panama. The goal is to see if the participants will behave cooperatively or competitively in the face of physical, mental, and monetary challenges. Newcomers join when some get eliminated.

Survive The Raft re-creates anthropologist Santiago Genovés’ controversial 1973 study of whether internationally diverse people would work together to survive at sea. The show is hosted by former Green Beret and NFL pro-Nate Boyer.

Russell, a father of five children who grew up as a mountain boy in North Carolina, now resides in Stafford. He sleeps with one eye open and is a superb interrogator who understands how to play the game. He learned various winter and hot terrain survival tactics during his stint in the military. Ellis is skilled in both hunting and fishing having a Souther background, but his time in the military also taught him survival techniques to withstand extremely cold, hot, windy, or wet terrains.

Russell Ellis Family

Russell Ellis shared that he was raised by a racist family in North Carolina. He grew up in a neighborhood where a Confederate flag was posted in his front yard. On the flag, at the bottom of it, it said the South will rise again.

When he was 9 or 10, Russell asked what the flag meant. His dad told him, “Son listen, it’s not going to be long before it’s illegal to be White in this country. It’s going to be illegal to be a Christian in this country. It’s going to be illegal to be a heterosexual White male in this country.”

While appearing in an interview on the channel Change The Narrative with JD Fuller, Russell mentioned his “dad’s wife” (as he doesn’t call her step-mom). He added in the interview that his parents had divorced when he was three years old.

According to Russell both of his parents were racists. Surprisingly, his mom remarried a Black man. For Russell’s dad, his mom’s marriage was shocking. His paternal grandparents used to tell his father, “Well, she left you for the ‘N-word’.”

Then his dad got custody of Russell and he didn’t see his mom until he was 10 after his mom went to court and got the visitation rights of him. However, at the time he hated his mother partly for “abandoning” him and partly for the reason that he was told “god doesn’t approve the interracial marriage.”

Russell’s mom had three children from her second marriage. He got to meet his siblings during the second visitation which he wasn’t expecting as he had made some racist remarks during the first visitation. These visitations changed him as he grew close to his mom and dad.

And, he started arguing with his dad. At the age of 15, he confronted his dad about the N-word and even got into a physical altercation.
