Yoly Rojas On Netflix’s The Ultimatum: Queer Love
It’s either get married or leave on Netflix’s The Ultimatum: Queer Love. The inaugural season of the show premiered on May 24, 2023, and it saw five couples — all made up of women and nonbinary people — as they search for the answer.
For these queer couples, tying the knot is an absolute dealbreaker. While one is ready to walk down the aisle, the other one is dragging their feet. So, to decide whether to marry or move on for good, the former issues an ultimatum of eight weeks to the latter. However, during these eight weeks, each person will enter into a trial marriage with a new partner from one of the other pairings. In the end, they are left with two future possibilities.
Our star, Yoly Rojas was the one who issued an ultimatum to her partner of three years, Mal Wright. She said that she just wanted Mal to “choose [her]” for a “once-in-a-lifetime commitment.” Unfortunately, Mal wasn’t ready to take the big step. She wanted to be on even stronger footing when it came to their finances and beyond before they decide to spend the rest of their lives together and potentially bring children into the world.
Joining Yoly and Mal for this experimental dating show were their co-stars Lexi Goldberg and Rae Cheung-Sutton, Mildred Woody and Tiff Der, Sam Mark and Aussie Chau, and Xander Boger and Vanessa Papa.
Are Yoly Rojas And Mal Wright Still Together?
Yoly and Mal initially met during Chicago Pride, it seemed like in the late 2010s, but their brief, unassuming chance encounter quickly developed into much more. The latter actually remarked, “She was a men’s stylist at Barneys at the time,” in the original production. I requested her Instagram so I could keep pleading with [the upscale retailer] for discounts.
Due to their same principles and morals, their first acquaintance quickly developed into a committed partnership, but by the time mid-2021 rolled around, they were faced with a difficult decision.
Within these three years, Yoly and Mal had already survived a move to Seattle as well as a brief separation, but the latter’s reluctance to pop the question was quickly proving to be their undoing. That’s because, unlike the former, who was more than prepared to settle down, her partner, who was two years older and 36 at the time, preferred to wait until he was in a far better financial situation before moving forward.
They simply had an idea of what it should look like in their heads and a timeframe to fit it; they didn’t have this unchangeable mindset that they would never want to establish a home or have children.
“It’s not about if I want to marry [Yoly],” Mal explained in the series. “I want to marry her, but I don’t necessarily feel like I’m in the place to provide for her like I want to provide.” They had another reason besides money (considering their future plans to undergo IVF) keeping them from trying as well; they were curious as to why Yoly picked them. “I knew her as a friend before I knew her as a lover,” they expressed. “Every time she has talked about another lover, it’s been very similar [to how I am and how we are]… So I am just like, ‘Why? Why Me?'”
Mal’s fears undoubtedly played a part in this, but the fact that Yoly immediately plunged into the “Ultimatum” experiment with Xandar Boger effectively proved them to be correct didn’t help. The latter is precisely the type of person the masc frequently feared was their partner’s type, and the fact that they forged a close bond practically right away added to their personal anxieties.
They did establish a strong relationship with Lexi Goldberg over their amazing trial marriage of three weeks, but they never engaged in physical contact, in contrast to Yoly and Xander, who genuinely did everything.
While Lexi undoubtedly contributed to upending Mal’s expectations of a timeline and made it plain that she would always be a part of their lives, Yoly and Xander’s trial marriage startled everyone. The cause? Despite only having known one other for a little over a month, it genuinely seemed as though they were starting to fall in love, making her years-long relationship more precarious than ever.
It was so difficult for them to return because it appeared that Mal’s worries about her completely devoting herself to whoever she was with without any significant distinction weren’t without merit.
As The Ultimatum: Queer Love was still going on, Yoly Rojas and Mal Wright didn’t share their relationship status. But we do know that the duo first met at Chicago Pride 2019, and their friendship blossomed into a full-blown relationship before the next year.
After that, the two went through a lot — a move to Seattle, a breakup, and a reconciliation — before they finally appeared on the Netflix show.
Overall, Yoly considered her Mal not only to be her partner but also her best friend “who I work thru problems with and are in agreement to resolve our arguments, however trivial it may seem.”
