Bryan Penn-Johnson Bio, Today, Family, Last Chance U

Bryan Penn-Johnson has departed from ELAC. Guess we’ll not be seeing the basketball player in the upcoming seasons of Netflix’s Last Chance U: Basketball anymore.

So, before we start missing him, let’s take a look at this star’s life over this Bryan Penn-Johnson Bio.

Bryan Penn-Johnson On Netflix’s Last Chance U: Basketball Season 2

Netflix’s Last Chance U: Basketball is all about the basketball team of East Los Angeles College (ELAC). They were once a team struggling to win any match, and it was only after the arrival of Head coach John Mosley, the players showed the world exactly what they are made of.

Sadly, one of the players, Bryan Penn-Johnson who dominated the center, left ELAC after season 2021 – 22 or after the show’s season 2.

This basketball pro started his career as a student at Wasatch Academy, a high school in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. At the time, he helped his team achieve the record of 24 wins against 2 losses in the 2017-2018 session as a senior. This also put them in the third position in all of Utah.

In 2018, Bryan then joined the University of Washington for the 2018-2019 session. But since his achievements were unheard of at the time, Bryan was Redshirted in his first year! The next year, he was then allowed in six games as a Redshirt Freshman during which he only scored five points against San Diego on November 24, 2019. Also, his performance during January 25, 2020, match against Colorado saw Bryan grab three rebounds and block two shots.

To further improve himself, in 2020, Bryan went on to become a student at Louisiana State University (LSU) and joined the LSU Tigers. Sadly, COVID hit the world that year, which him only being able to appear in five matches as his team made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

With this, Bryan’s position within the Division I circuit came into jeopardy, and he exited LSU in 2021. So, it was only at this point he joined the basketball team of East Los Angeles College as a Center. According to Bryan, the decision to transfer to ELAC was to get more playing time and help him improve mentally and physically as a player. “ELAC helped me regain my confidence,” he added.

Bryan’s journey at Cal Pol was also documented a little in Last Chance U: Basketball season 2.

Where Is Bryan Penn-Johnson Today?

Today, as of December 2022, Bryan Penn-Johnson is enrolled at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly). The University invited him to play for the Cal Poly Mustangs, whilst offering a full scholarship and also room of his own. How could he say no to that?

His new institute is also a part of the NCAA Division I circuit, and so far, he’s played 29 matches (started in 15) for the season 2022-23 and scored an average of 9.5 points in all games he started.

Bryan Penn-Johnson Verbal Commits

Bryan Penn-Johnson fulfilled all of his verbal comments before 2022. Initially, he transferred to Washington in May 2017, then to Louisiana State University in June 2020, then to ELAC in 2021, and finally to Cal Poly in April 2022.

The same year he enroll at Cal Polym, former players Tuukka Jaakkola and Hank Hollingsworth left the team.

The 6 feet 10 inches, Bryan Penn-Johnson has an astounding standing reach of 9 feet 9 inches. Also, his wingspan is 7 feet 6.5 inches — large enough to hug two persons.

How Old Is Bryan Penn-Johnson?

Bryan Penn-Johnson was 22 years of age when  Last Chance U: Basketball season 2 premiered in 2022.

He was one of the youngest players featured that season.

His co-stars were Head Coach John Mosley, Coach Rob Robinson, Coach Ken Hunter, Brandon Wilson, Shemar Morrow, Demetrius “DC” Calipi II, Josh Phillips, Damani Whitlock, Dezmond Washington, Justin Gladney, and DJ Gilmore.

Bryan Penn-Johnson comes from a family of giants (not literally). His father is 7 feet 2 inches and his mother is 6 feet 5 inches.

According to the basketball star, his family was always in his “corner” and believed that he could someday be “someone great.” Especially, Bryan thanks his mother Chanai Johnson-Jelks for all the love and encouragement.

Unfortunately, Bryan’s biological parents have long divorced. And now, Chanai’s married top Jai Jelks (a  South Los Angeles, California native).

As for his siblings, Bryan has an older brother named Bryan and a sister named Breanna Marie.

His sister, Breanna is a mother of two (Kameron and Karter). Sadly, her third child Kaliyah Marie Nevaeh Lyons passed away on April 10, 2017.

Trivia: Before Bryan transferred from the University of Washington, he was a little “homesick and had some family issues.”
