The story dates back on 3 June 2019 when Burt Templet died in the hands of his son Anthony Templet in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He then called 911 and confessed his crime. When police arrived, they found the 17-year-old waiting for them, and in a recent interview, Anthony says he was startled that he was handcuffed and taken away because he expected the problem to be dropped after a brief talk. This was not the only weird thing about the situation.
Anthony said that he and Burt had a violent argument about Anthony’s right to privacy before the homicide occurred. He admitted to seizing two of his father’s firearms and shooting three shots into his head in police interviews seen in the video. Burt passed away later in the hospital.
Anthony claimed he shot his father in self-defense, although he had no bruises to show for it, and the house was nice and orderly—except for a crack in Burt’s bedroom door, which Anthony claimed was caused by his father attempting to break into the locked room to get at him.
If that didn’t bode well for Anthony, the fact that he’d taken out two loaded pistols that evening (both owned by Burt) suggested that he wasn’t frantically trying to save his own life, but that he had a deliberate intent to kill—a notion Anthony nonchalantly confirmed, explaining that he wanted both guns in his possession in case one didn’t work.
Burt apparently pleaded with his son to stop, but Anthony showed no mercy. In addition, Anthony testified that he had pursued his father into a neighboring restroom before shooting—an act that contradicted the concept that he had no other options since he was in imminent danger. On the surface, there wasn’t much to this story, and news sources at the time dismissed it as just another of Louisiana’s usual homicides.
Later, a deeper investigation revealed that Anthony was the way he was because of his abusive upbringing. The investigation further revealed Burt as an abusive alcoholic person. He had tormented and terrorized his first wife Teresa Thompson. Later, he snatched their Anthony and fled to Louisiana, where he’d been hiding out for the better part of 11 years.
To keep it a secret, Burt didn’t let Anthony attend school. He had also installed a surveillance camera to keep watch and installed GPS tracking devices on Anthony and Susan’s phones.
Susan Templet, Burt’s then-wife, left him in earlier 2019. She had filed for a protective order against him. She posted on social media that Burt had allegedly knocked out several of her teeth.
Natasha, Anthony’s sister, also spoke to WAFB in 2019. She shared, “After 11 years of waiting to hear if my brother was still alive, he is found. He has been secluded and abused all these years by his own father. My brave brother had to defend himself for the last time against that evil man.”
Natasha spoke about Teresa and Burt’s relationship. She added, “Burt and my mom were together for about ten years and it was extremely violent”.
Natasha added more, “I can only imagine what Anthony’s been through. When he was a baby, Burt would hold him in his arms while abusing my mother.” Natasha stated that she and her mother discovered Anthony’s parents lived in Baton Rouge. They distributed missing leaflets throughout the city eleven years ago. The “missing boy” posters featured images of both Anthony and Burt, as well as a phone number for the Houston Sheriff’s Office.
