Christine Cherry Job
Christine Cherry has indulged herself in creating ceramic works 30 years ago. She trained at North Staffordshire University, Stoke On Trent, and earned her BA degree (Hons) in 1986. During which she learned her skills under tutors such as John Weber and Derek Emms and Neil Malkin.
She also did a foundation art course at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston before that.
After graduating college, Christine pursued a career in teaching and became a primary school teacher for over 25 years. She loved teaching and did it with all her passions but in recent years she felt that it was time for me to leave teaching and return to creating. After 30 years of completing her degree, she started creating ceramics work in 2016.
Now, she spends most of her time in her studio located in a community of creatives at ‘Make North’ studios near Preston in Lancashire.
Christine specializes in two types of ceramic ware. Her carved series is of slip-cast Parian Porcelain. First, she handcrafts forms from clay or Plaster of Paris. Then, she makes molds for these and slip-cast vessels. The forms are intricately carved and decorated.
Furthermore, she works closely on each piece, individualizing and finishing them. The Parian vessels are highly translucent, self-glazing, and possess a marble-like finish, which is incredibly tactile.
Whereas, her stoneware range is thrown on a pottery wheel, turned and finished, then decorated using a variety of glazes and techniques. Several layers of glaze are painted by hand, resulting in individuality on each vessel. All of the glazes she uses are completely lead-free, food-safe, and nontoxic.
Her works have been published in Ceramics Monthly USA – November 2020 and Cumbria and Lancashire Life – December Edition 2018. She also participated in events such as Earth and Fire International Ceramics Fair, Potfest in the Pens (July-Aug 2019), and Potfest in the Pens (July-Aug 2019).
Furthermore, Christine has also showcased her creations at Earlams Gallery (2017), Platform Gallery (2018), and Number Four Gallery (2020). You can also visit her online shop in Etsy (@ChristineCherryShop).
