Meet Sarah Matthews, The Former White House Deputy Press Secretary At Jan 6 Hearing
Sarah Matthews is among the key figures on the January 6 committee’s ongoing investigation. However, the media never caught the wind of their role in the White House. Sarah was working as the former White House press secretary. She is among the group who were offering consequential pieces of evidence behind the scenes.
The panel is gradually releasing each one of them at each public hearing, and the list also included Cassidy Hutchinson. Working as a press aide, she resigned in the aftermath of the January 6 attack in protest of Trump’s action.
Before resigning, Sarah released a statement that read, “I was honored to serve in the Trump administration and proud of the policies we enacted. As someone who worked in the halls of Congress, I was deeply disturbed by what I saw today. I’ll be stepping down from my role, effective immediately. Our nation needs a peaceful transfer of power”.
Sarah testified behind closed doors with the select committee in February. She told the committee that Trump’s tweet attacking Vice President Mike Pene on January 6 was like “pouring gasoline on the fire”.
During an interview with The Washington Post, Sarah explained that she had been “visibly shaken” by Trump not speaking out against the protesters. When the former president told them, “we love you,” and that they were “very special,” Sarah said she was “disturbed.” As for the reason why she resigned she shared that it was “deeply personal,” maintaining that she “couldn’t walk into the building the following day and act like everything was fine because it was indefensible”.
On One Year Anniversary of Jan. 6, Sarah tweeted, “Make no mistake, the events on the 6th were a coup attempt, a term we’d use had they happened in any other country, and former President Trump failed to meet the moment”. She then added, “While it might be easier to ignore or whitewash the events of that day for political expediency — if we’re going to be morally consistent — we need to acknowledge these hard truths.”
Sarah was hired by Kayleigh McEnany who she met while working for Trump’s re-election campaign. When Kayleigh took the press secretary position at the White House, she hired Sarah in June 2020.
“In this role, I serve as a spokesperson for President Trump and spend a lot of my day working with the White House press corps,” the North Canton native said for the Kent State Piece. “I also develop messaging strategy, prep Kayleigh for briefings, and staff the president for interviews”.
Cassidy, a former Meadows assistant who testified in front of the select panel in public, was also supported by Sarah. She tweeted three times about Hutchinson, applauding her for coming up, challenging critics to give an oath of testimony, and outlining Hutchinson’s responsibilities.
One tweet of Sarah read, “Anyone downplaying Cassidy Hutchinson’s role or her access in the West Wing either doesn’t understand how the Trump WH worked or is attempting to discredit her because they’re scared of how damning this testimony is”.
