Robert Stacey is teaming up with Mireia Ferreres Luna to compete in Bake Off: The Professionals season 5.
In an interview with The Westmorland Gazette, Robert shared that he was hesitant to commit to a career in food.
“I’d always loved food and it was a big part of family life as it is for most people and I had a choice of becoming a chef or going off and doing an art degree,” he told the outlet. “I figured I could probably do both cooking – follow one passion with food and create beautiful works of art on the plate”.
This, Robert added was his ‘naive’ and ‘young mentality’ and ultimately a justification as he knew he would always have a job. Robert applied to Westminster Kingsway College of Culinary Arts while scrubbing pots and making sandwiches in a local gastropub, and went on to study and work at a variety of South London pubs and clubs.
Robert soon learned the gritty side of the industry when he bagged a job at Marco Pierre White’s Soho restaurant L’Escargot. After leaving, Robert went on to the bar where he was assistant manager. “At college, I was burning out and doing a bit too much and I needed an understanding of front of house”.
