A Cheshire chef is going head to head with other esteemed culinarians on BBC’s Great British Menu Season 17 and that is Samuel Lomas, popularly known as Sam Lomas.
Gowing up, Sam often used to watch Great British Menu after school. Seeing amazing chefs like Jeremy Lee, Angela Hartnett, and Stephen Terry in action, he says, had made him eventually know that cooking was an actual job that he too could do. “If you had told me back then that in 2022 that I would be competing for the North West in Great British Menu I would have been seriously baffled”, he expressed on his social media now that this dream of his coming true.

Great British Menu returned to our screen on 1 February 2022 with a brand new theme, judges, and batch of chefs for series 17.
So, this season too the show puts the nation’s most talented chefs on a competition that the viewers have been so fond of. The chefs are representing eight British regions.
Three chefs went through to represent each region on the show and the regions include Central, Scotland, the South West, the London South/East area, the North West, Wales, the North East, and Northern Ireland.
Sam, meanwhile, competed against three North West chefs each week for a top spot in the competition.
The theme of the Great British Menu this season celebrates 100 Years of Great British Broadcasting, and Sam’s menu is paying homage to radio legends and well-loved northern police drama, Happy Valley.
In the first episode of the North West round in week 2, the chefs create a canape, starter, and fish dish. Sam, for his part, creates a starter inspired by Happy Valley’s moorland setting for a lamb dish.
He engages in a cook-off with Liverpudlian Dave Critchley, executive chef at Chinese restaurant Lu Ban, Lancashire’s Stevie Lamb, head chef at the 4AA rosette hotel The Orangery in Darlington, and Brazilian born Caroline Martins, who lives in Manchester and owns fusion cookery pop-ups across the region.
More chefs appearing in the series are Harvey Perttola, Ben Orpwood, Liam Dillon, and Sally Abe.
His dishes are described as “creative, seasonal and locally inspired”. Sam is dedicated to ensuring he has a close connection with local suppliers, helping to grow his ingredients and raise livestock on site.
On his Instagram page, Sam writes that he is a “Real Bread Enthusiast” and a “Fan of slow food, charcuterie and being outdoors”.
